Holding the Guinness World Record for the largest colony of Geoffrey’s Rousette fruit bats, the cave is a vibrant, living ecosystem. This was the very first tourist spot we visited during our 5D4N Davao trip, and it set the tone for an unforgettable journey.

✈️ How to Get to Monfort Batcave in Samal Island

We arrived at Davao City Airport around 11:00 AM and were picked up by our ever-reliable tour guide, Kuya Jerry. The van was already included in the package tour we availed, making things really convenient.

If you’re planning a DIY trip, from the city, we headed straight to the ferry terminal bound for Samal Island. The ferry ride was short and smooth—only about 15 minutes—and cost us ₱50 each. Once you reach Babak, you may take a tricycle or a motorcycle to the sanctuary. You are encouraged to negotiate the tricycle or motorcycle fare with the driver; P100 is usually good for 3 people.

Before heading to the Batcave, we had lunch first.

🥘 Lunch Stop at Zagpa Restau Bar

We arrived past noon, so we stopped at Zagpa Restau Bar for a quick lunch. It had a chill, homey atmosphere and gave us just the right amount of energy we needed before continuing with our tour.

The drive from the restaurant to the batcave was unexpectedly scenic. We passed by a beautiful stretch of road lined with trees—it felt like nature itself was welcoming us to Samal.

We finally arrived at Monfort Batcave Sanctuary, one of the most unique places I’ve ever visited. The entrance fee was ₱100, and before exploring the site, we attended a short orientation conducted by the staff.

You can’t go inside the caves, but there are safe and designated viewing spots from above. From those points, you’ll see thousands—maybe even millions—of bats hanging from the walls or flying in and out. The sight was eerie but fascinating. We could hear their soft fluttering and high-pitched squeaks. I never thought I’d find bats this interesting, but the experience was both educational and awe-inspiring.
