Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks – Book Review

Message in a bottle Nicholas Sparks

Message in a Bottle is the second romance novel written by American author Nicholas Sparks. The story was put on the big screen in the year 1999 directed by Luis Mandoki. It stars Kevin Costner, Robin Wright (under her married name Robin Wright Penn), and Paul Newman. The film was filmed in Chicago and Wilmington, North Carolina.

Message in a Bottle Synopsis:

Thrown to the waves, and to fate, the bottle could have ended up anywhere. Instead, it is found just three weeks after it begins its journey. Theresa Osborne, divorced and the mother of a twelve-year-old son, discovers it during a seaside vacation from her job as a Boston newspaper columnist. Inside is a letter that opens with, “My Dearest Catherine, I miss you my darling, as I always do, but today is particularly hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together.”

For Garrett, the message is the only way he knows to express his undying love for a woman he has lost. For Theresa, wary of romance since her husband shattered her trust, the message raises questions that intrigue her. Challenged by the mystery, and driven to find Garrett by emotions she does not fully understand, Theresa begins a search that takes her to a sunlit coastal town and an unexpected confrontation. Brought together either by chance or something more powerful, Theresa and Garrett’s lives come together in a tale that resonates with our deepest hopes for finding everlasting love.

According to Nicholas Sparks, Message in a Bottle was inspired by his father after the death of his mother. Her father was crushed after the incident. Sparks was worried about his father because he pretty much became a recluse. After four long years of worrying, his father started to open up to the world again and eventually fell in love with someone. But after two days of his dad telling him that he’s engaged, he died in a car accident.

My Reading Experience:

I honestly love the book even though it made me cry a lot.

After reading the book, I immediately thought that this is very Nicholas Sparks. His style of writing that will make you fell in love at first then will give you a sad and heartbreaking ending. But aside from the emotions, it gives you, you will also come to realize the message of his story.

This romance novel isn’t just about two people who just fell in love with each other. The story of  Garrett Blake, Theresa Osborne, both lost their first love, finds that love again in each other’s arms. Destiny bought them together when Theresa found a letter inside a bottle along the shore when she went for a vacation. The letter was from Garrett for his dead wife and was sent to the sea. The challenges they went through, the struggles to face in entertaining new person their lives.

Message in a Bottle – I was amazed by how it was written. Somehow, it feels to hope of a guy who’s into sending letters too. 🙂 If you wanted to know what’s the letter all about, please read the book.

The conflicts they faced when they were deciding/thinking of who will give up their comfort zone for their relationship to work. (Read the book to find out.) This made me realized that a relationship does not involved in just emotion alone. It’s a commitment and how much you’re willing to compromise and sacrifice for the love of your life.

I was devastated after reading the part toward the ending. I couldn’t understand Garrett and I feel sorry for Theressa. But then I came to understand the reason behind it (not spoiling) after reading Garrett’s letter for Theressa.

Learnings from the book:

It’s so easy to give up on love when you experience a painful heartbreak. It will never be easy! It’s ok and normal to be sad and feel the pain. But always look forward. Don’t close your heart and build walls to millions of possibilities. After all, love will knock again the least you expect it.

Keep believing!
