If someone asks me to recommend ONE place on the Island of Samar – I would say, visit Biri Island. This island is renowned for its unique rock formations and offers an unspoiled off-the-beaten-path experience, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world.
BIRI ISLAND, NORTHERN SAMAR
Biri is a fifth-class municipality consisting of several islands located just off the Northern coast of Samar Island, facing the Pacific Ocean to the east and San Bernardino Strait to the west. The island is geographically part of the province of Northern Samar, one of the three provinces of Samar Island, the third largest island of the Philippines.
The most striking feature of Biri Island is its impressive rock formations, carved by the forces of nature over countless years. These geological wonders, known locally as the “Biri Rock Formations,” are characterized by towering limestone rocks, tidal pools, and rugged coastal landscapes. This rock formation is composed of four small, rocky islands located in that perilous area where the San Bernardino Strait meets the Pacific Ocean. These are the Magasang, Magsapad, Macadlaw, and Puhunan Rocks, each with its own unique appearance. Aside from these rock formations, there are other spots on the Island that are worth visiting.

Place To Visit in Biri Island
Biri Rock Formations
The rock formations are the primary tourist spot in Biri.Β There are six major rock formations on the northern side of Biri Island. The six are called (in order, from West to East): Magasang, Magsapad, Macadlaw, Puhunan, Bel-at, and Caranas.

Bel-at Tidal Pool
I first saw a natural pool in Siargao, and I was not aware that there’s one in Biri Island too. The bel-at natural tidal pool is a delightfully safe sea pool to swim in, with lots of crevasses to change in, or to shelter from the sun. Some parts of it have some sharp rocks so please be very cautious. The water is clean and pure so just swim and enjoy yourself.

Busay(little batanes)
Busay is one of the highest points of Biri where 360Φ― view of the island and the neighboring islands can be seen.

The best time to visit Busay is during sunset.
