A bend in the road by Nicholas Sparks book review

A Bend in the Road is the fifth novel written by the American author Nicholas Sparks. It was published in 2001.

A BEND IN THE ROAD by Nicholas Sparks Synopsis:

Miles Ryan’s life seemed to end the day his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident two years ago. Missy had been his first love, and Miles fervently believes she will be his last. As a deputy in the North Carolina town of New Bern, Miles Ryan not only grieves for Missy, but also longs to bring the unknown driver to justice. Then Miles meets Sarah Andrews. The second grade teacher of his son, Jonah, Sarah had left Baltimore after a difficult divorce to start over in the gentler surroundings of New Bern. Perhaps it’s her own emotional wounds that make her sensitive to the hurt she first sees in Jonah’s eyes, and then his father’s.

Tentatively, Sarah and Miles reach out to each other. Soon they are both laughing for the first time in years . . . and falling in love. Neither will be able to guess how closely linked they are to a shocking secret—one that will force them to question everything they ever believed in . . . and make a heartbreaking choice that will change their lives forever.Source: https://nicholassparks.com/stories/a-bend-in-the-road/

My Reading experience:

I’m on a Nicholas Sparks’ books marathon and this is my 12th book to read. The author was able to catch my emotions as a reader, enabling me to feel and invest in his characters’ emotions including their pain. This is a story that sticks long after the last page.

A Bend in the Road was inspired by the author’s brother-in-law. He lost his wife due to cancer and Sparks is concerned about how he would cope up with being a widow and raising his child alone. And I think he as an author was able to convey the struggle and pain of being in that situation.

“Sometimes, things don’t work out the way we want them to.”

I felt for both main characters Miles and Sarah, their past stories, and their struggles. Just when you thought you had the best in life, a sudden 360 degrees turn happened. Miles lost his wife and Sarah had a divorce. Life is indeed surprising at times.

“If it’s over, then don’t let the past screw up the rest of your life.”

Easier said than done but this book made me realize that no matter how hard it is to move on, we really need to move forward and go on with our lives. This book tells the story of a man’s journey through grief and anyone who has been through the loss of a loved one – that never-ending pain.

Nicholas Sparks did a wonderful job of reminding us that we can choose the path we wanted to go through – be stranded on the same ground or move on with your life. But I also appreciate how he does not invalidate the feeling of Miles after the loss of his wife. Instead, he clearly conveys the struggle and inner turmoil of a man wanting to get on with his life but never really being able to let go. The pain that we all have when going through grief.

“Grown-ups always say that things are complicated.”

This story also had a fair amount of mystery going throughout. Sparks allowed us into the mind of the anonymous “bad guy” who was involved in the hit-and-run that killed Missy. The revelation of who he/she was and how it will turn the story at the end added to the mystery.

Can I just also say how strong Sarah was. Surviving after a bad divorce and dealing with the issue of how she will have a child of her own in the feature. I’m very impressed with how she was able to deal with all of the bad things that had happened in her life. Just when she thought it’s an end game for her – she was able to meet Ryan and his son Jonah.

Learnings from the book:

The love story between Miles and Sarah shows that we can always choose love and welcome new people in our lives. It’s never too late to decide the path you wanted to go through. It won’t be easy but it will be worth it.

Great read I must say! I enjoyed reading it – an easy to read book. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves reading.
